Myth-Busting Skin Hacks with Dr Dave
In the ever-changing world of beauty and skincare, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest trends that promise miraculous results. From cold teaspoons to homemade sugar scrubs, social media is full of DIY tips and tricks that claim to revolutionise your routine. So, how do we really know FACT vs FICTION?
Meet Dr Dave Reilly, our in-house Senior Scientist as he reveals the truth about 4 popular skincare trends that could be damaging your skin…
Hack #1: Cold teaspoons for puffy eyes
MYTH:
Putting chilled teaspoons over your eyes will reduce puffiness and dark circles.
TRUTH:
“I hear this one a LOT and trust me, the effects are short-lived. Plus, the extreme cold is harsh on the delicate skin area around your eyes and can lead to irritation. Instead, I’d recommend using a nourishing eye cream that’s been designed to target puffy eyes and dark circles. It’ll be much safer and more effective long term.”
Hack #2: Homemade sugar scrubs for exfoliation
MYTH:
Mixing sugar and coconut oil or Vaseline creates a gentle, natural exfoliant for super soft skin.
TRUTH:
“These DIY scrubs are everywhere. The trouble is, if the sugar granules are too large, you could cause micro-tears which can irritate the skin or even lead to acne. My advice is to stick to acid-based products like AHAs and BHAs to exfoliate the skin effectively but gently. Remember, you only need to do this 2-3 times a week… MAX!”
Hack #3: Toothpaste as a spot treatment
MYTH:
Dabbing a blob of toothpaste on spots dries them out and shrinks them.
TRUTH:
“We’ve all tried this one at some point, right? The reality is, doing this can actually make spots worse as toothpaste is full of things like hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, surfactants and alcohol, which can lead to redness and peeling. If you’re struggling with spot-prone skin, try targeted treatments that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. They’re much more effective at tackling spots without damaging the skin. Keep skin moisturised too with a gentle day cream.
Hack #4: Lemon juice for skin brightening
MYTH:
Applying lemon juice directly to the skin gives an instant brightening effect and reduces dark spots.
TRUTH:
“While lemon juice is high in vitamin C, it’s also highly acidic and can disrupt the pH balance of the skin. This can lead to irritation, dryness and a weaker skin barrier, leaving it more susceptible to irritation and damage from pollutants. So, for naturally healthy, radiant-looking skin, instead, protect it with a hydrating, SPF cream and leave the lemons in your lemonade.”
