The Secrets of Self-Care: How to Feel Empowered Through Your Skin
We show love to lots of people every day – hugging a partner, cooking dinner for the kids, supporting a friend through a difficult time – but we often forget to show this same care to ourselves.
Here at Absolute Collagen, we believe that investing in self-care will not only help bring joy to each day, but it will allow us to unlock our absolute potential. And self-care doesn’t need to be complicated either. In fact, a simple yet effective skincare routine can make all the difference!
To find out how the nation feels about this topic, we surveyed 2,000 people across the UK to discover how they take time for themselves as well as the role skincare takes in their self-care routine.
Let’s jump into the results, below.
The nation’s wellness goals and woes
Before we get into skincare – our personal area of expertise – we first wanted to take a look at Brits’ overall attitudes to wellness routines. After all, skincare is just one way you can practise self-care!
Positively, the majority of our respondents regularly dedicate time to their self-care routine, with 39% of Brits either always or often taking time for their wellness. What’s more, a quarter of Brits also said they actively prioritise making time for themselves and wellness.
However, there’s also some not-so-good news. According to our survey, 29% of Brits rarely or never make the time for their wellness. Perhaps more concerningly, 13% of our respondents said they just don’t know how to make time for wellness, while 11% didn’t think it was important.
Now, wellness habits and routines can take many different forms. In our survey, most people either pointed to regular exercise (49%) or better sleeping habits (40%) as the habits they’d most like to incorporate into their wellness routine. However, keeping up with this type of self-care can be challenging – especially when trying to balance work and family every day.
That’s where skincare comes into the picture. Over a quarter of our respondents (27%) wanted to incorporate a good skincare routine into their self-care and fortunately, with a few simple steps, this can be a relatively easy yet transformative change to make.
The importance of skincare for your wellness
Here at Absolute Collagen, we are all about feeling confident in your skin. And it appears the nation agrees with us: 26% of Brits feel more confident when they’re happy with their skin, while 29% feel less confident when experiencing issues with their skin.
Of those issues, fine lines and wrinkles were the most common, with 32% identifying this sign of ageing as a problem in the survey. Acne and eczema were also common skin problems that impact people’s confidence across the country.
In fact, our survey found that people change their daily routines because of their skin insecurities. This includes avoiding having their photo taken (19%), avoiding taking photos (18%), avoiding uploading to social media (12%), and not attending social events (7%).
And that’s why we are always talking about feeling confident in your skin! Even by following a simple skincare routine every day, you are investing valuable time into yourself and ultimately your self-esteem.
So, how do Brits actually feel about skincare?
While it’s clear that feeling positive about your skin has a positive impact on your wellbeing, how much does the nation know when it comes to establishing an effective skincare routine?
Well, according to our survey, more than half of Brits (54%) admit that they have minimal or no knowledge about skincare or skincare ingredients. Furthermore, a significant 32% of respondents say they have never changed their skincare routine, while 23% of British women specifically feel overwhelmed by skincare trends.
It’s not all bad news though! Of those people who do follow a skincare routine, 39% see it as essential for their skin appearance, and 24% of Brits view it as an investment in themselves. What’s more, the majority of respondents (41%) felt confident in the order of their skincare routine - which tells us that when Brits do commit to their skin, they want to get it right!
For more expert insight, we asked our co-founder, Darcy Laceby, about her thoughts on the findings:
“We’ve all been there at some point: standing in the skincare aisle, not knowing where to start or which products to buy.
“In fact, as our survey revealed, 41% of Brits do not know what skincare ingredients to look for when shopping for new products. At the other end of the scale, only 16% of our respondents claimed to have, at least, a good knowledge of skincare.
“However, you don’t need to be an expert in all things skin to enjoy the benefits of incorporating skincare into your wellness routine! Instead, focus on the essentials: a soothing cleanser, hydrating moisturisers, SPF and a targeted serum are the perfect products to start with.
“Also don’t just think about the products you are putting on your skin, but how you’re supporting your skin from within. For example, taking a daily dose of a liquid collagen supplement is a fantastic way to support glowy skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines.”
