Seven Tips for Thick and Glossy Looking Hair

Welcome back to hair care 101 with Eva Proudman, Absolute Collagen’s resident trichologist. In this blog, our hair expert Eva shares her seven essential hair care tips to help you improve the health of your hair. Whether you’re dealing with dryness, dullness, or thinning, Eva’s expert tips can help you get luscious locks that you’ll love.

1. Maintain a Good Hair Care Regime

Eva's first tip is maintaining a good hair care regime. "One of the most important things is a good hair care regime. Using shampoo and conditioner regularly to maintain the health and pH balance of the scalp and hair is key. You’ll be surprised to know, most of us don’t actually wash our hair enough, I recommended every other day"

This is where Absolute Collagen's Collagen Complex Hair Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner Duo comes in. Formulated by leading hair specialists, it strengthens, thickens, nourishes, volumises, and boosts your hair's shine. Clinical trials showed up to a 20% increase in hair thickness with our collagen shampoo and conditioner in just 8 weeks.

2. Wash Your Hair Correctly

Eva goes on to say, "Wash your hair on the natural fall rather than bringing it up and over the top of your head. This keeps the natural cuticle scale that protects the hair in the right direction on the natural fall, limiting matting and tangling."

And don’t forget, wet hair is fragile, so make sure you use a wide-tooth comb or a wet specific brush to minimise breakage and damage.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

Next, Eva highlights the importance of diet: "Eat well, have a balanced diet with enough protein each day. For an average women in her 40s this is around 65 grams per day; an average chicken breast contains around 35 grams and an egg 7 grams."

Eva explains that your hair is one of the fastest dividing cells in your body, but it’s not essential, so it often gets neglected in poor diets.

If you're on a plant-based diet, "take a Vitamin B Complex supplement to ensure that you get your daily dose of this very important vitamin," she advises. This will help keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

4. Manage Stress

Stress is another big factor in hair health. "When we are stressed the hair can really suffer in terms of quality and quantity," Eva explains.

An active lifestyle is a great way of reducing your stress levels. So finding a regular exercise you enjoy or engaging in fun hobbies that allow you to lose yourself and just be you for a little bit can be incredibly beneficial for both your fitness and stress levels.

5. More Vitamin D

Eva also points out the importance of Vitamin D; "Most of us are low or deficient in Vitamin D. The hair uses Vitamin D to stay in the growing phase and for follicle regeneration."

If you’re going to take a Vitamin D supplement for hair health, you should aim for the recommended daily dose of 1000 IU to support healthy hair growth. Sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D, aim to get 20 minutes of sunlight on your arms or legs several times a week, remembering to always wear SPF on your face. A balanced diet with enough vitamins can really help enhance the efforts of your hair care routine.

6. Better Together: Collagen Supplements

To really boost your hair care results, add Absolute Collagen supplements to your routine too. They work wonders alongside the Thickening Shampoo & Conditioner Duo, helping to strengthen your hair from the inside out. Absolute Collagen Marine Collagen Supplements are clinically proven to improve not just your hair, but also your skin and nails, making them the perfect partner for our thickening hair care products!

In an independent double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial on Absolute Collagen supplement, 67% self reported that hair feels thicker and participants had a 32% reduction in hair damage after 12 weeks.

7. Prioritise Good Sleep

Sleep is another essential factor when it comes to healthy hair. "We regenerate our cells when we sleep. Poor sleep or sustained lack of sleep will reflect in the hair health with signs such as excessive shedding, thinning, dull and lifeless hair," Eva says.

A good night’s sleep also really helps with our skin health too. Make sure you get enough restorative sleep to keep your hair and skin looking its best. Getting in the habit of going to bed and waking up at similar times can also do wonders in helping you get a good night's sleep.

8. DIY Hairdressing Tips

Lastly, for those who love DIY hairdressing, Eva has some valuable advice: "If you are going to colour, cut, or heat treat your hair, follow the instructions to the letter on any colour products."

She tells us to make sure we use heat protectors and keep styling tools below 180 degrees to avoid damage. For the brave, sharp scissors are essential to prevent split ends, so invest in good-quality tools if you’re thinking of giving yourself a trim too!
