What is Collagen, and how does it build skin strength?

Collagen is the most commonly found protein in the human body.  It is found in the skin, bones, hair, nails and connective tissues and helps to provide strength and support within the body.  

Collagen is secreted by a variety of different cells, but in the connective tissues of the skin it is the fibroblast cells that are responsible for collagen production. Your body uses amino acids and combines them to make collagen, however as you age your body’s natural ability to synthesize collagen decreases, reducing the structural integrity of the dermis and leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles and sagging skin.  

Research shows that collagen levels begin to deplete from the age of 25, and that due to this natural depletion we may have lost around a third of our collagen by the time we have celebrated our 40th birthdays.
