How to Stay Safe in the Sun This Summer

2 mins By Darcy Laceby

From wearing SPF all year round to drinking plenty of water, we break down the best ways to stay safe in the sun this summer.

Whether you love long walks on the beach or an afternoon barbecue in the garden, we all love soaking up the summer sun in different ways.

However, it’s important to stay safe in the sun this summer to avoid any skin damage from too much sun exposure. That’s why our very own Darcy Laceby, Co-Founder of Absolute Collagen, has helpfully broken down five top tips for the best sun protection in the video, below:

For more details on staying safe in the sun this summer, continue reading, below:

1. Wear SPF all year round

While many may only crack out the suncream when summer rolls around, you should actually wear SPF all year round to avoid skin damage from the sun.

That’s right, even on the most cloudy, overcast day, you need to be implementing SPF cream into your daily skincare routine. That’s because the UVA rays, which cause sun skin damage and impact signs of ageing, are present throughout the year, no matter the season.

What’s more, wearing SPF every day as sun protection can also help protect against environmental pollutants and free radicals that cause skin damage.

So, whether it’s a scorching summer’s day or a windy week in winter, you should be applying SPF to your face and neck to stay safe in the sun.

2. Always wear factor 30 (at least)

Wearing SPF every day is a great start to staying safe in the sun, but there are still a couple details to sort out for the best sun protection. For example, what SPF should you wear to avoid skin damage on your face and neck?

Well, while you may need a higher level of sun protection, everyone should wear at least SPF 30 to stay safe in the sun. That’s because SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays, which cause sunburn and can increase the risk of skin cancer, where lower SPF creams provide less UV protection.

It’s best to think of SPF 30 as a universal level of protection that keeps all skin types safe from sun exposure. That’s why our Deep Lift Day Cream includes a SPF 30 Broad Spectrum to keep you safe from sun skin damage – just apply to your face and neck once a day!

3. Use a hydrating face serum

Even when you wear the right SPF every day, spending all day out in the sun can dehydrate your skin. This can lead to exaggerated wrinkles, increased skin sensitivity, and a dull complexion.

To avoid this type of sun skin damage, you can apply our Deep Lift Collagen Boosting Serum at the end of each day. This helpful hydrating product contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and bakuchiol, which can soothe your skin after extended sun exposure. All you need to do is apply a few drops to your face and leave to soak for five minutes. Easy!

For the best sun protection, you can also follow up your serum drops with our Deep Lift Night Cream, which looks after your skin barrier while you sleep.

4. Try Absolute Collagen supplements

While you may have heard that excessive sun exposure can lead to premature wrinkles, did you know that’s because spending too long in the sun can slow down collagen production?

If you’ll forgive us for briefly touching upon the science, our collagen levels naturally start to decline from 25 years old – which then accelerates around the age of 50. However, UV rays from sun exposure reduces collagen production even further, leading to those premature signs of ageing.

But don’t worry, you can minimise those signs of ageing from sun skin damage with our award-winning marine collagen supplements. In fact, in our clinical trial, 100% of participants experienced improvements in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after 12 weeks. All you need to do is take one collagen sachet per day and keep an eye out for those amazing results!

5. Stay hydrated

And finally, a really simple trick to stay safe in the sun: drink plenty of water throughout the day!

Staying properly hydrated helps to maintain the moisture balance of your skin – which is really important for your skin’s protective barrier. This means your skin is less likely to become dry and cracked, which makes it more prone to damage from sun exposure.

What’s more, if you do catch the sun and suffer some skin damage, water helps to promote your skin’s natural repair process and heal sunburn faster.

Now you know how to stay safe in the sun, and how we can help minimise sun skin damage, you’re ready to start your Absolute Collagen journey. Browse our Deep Lift ranges, read our Absoluters’ success stories, or head over to our blog for more skincare advice.
